A new club has formed in Mitcham providing supported swim sessions for disabled adults. WeSwim, which meets at Canons Leisure Centre every Wednesday, is a London-wide charity empowering disabled adults to get active. This week, I sat down with Harriet Glanville to talk about the work they do and how we, as a community, can support them.

💪 Under 16s in Merton will be able to attend free gym classes every week across the borough, starting in October half term. The scheme is part of Merton’s wider ambition to become London’s first Borough of Sport — something that would place an emphasis on getting more residents physically fit as well as celebrating the borough’s sporting heritage. Special instructor-led classes will be available for 11–16 year-olds to book at all three of the council’s leisure centres four times a week and will include strength and core conditioning sessions. ⚽ A football fanatic who had been to every AFC Wimbledon game over the past 37 years has died suddenly. Michael Taliadoros, who had watched every one of AFC Wimbledon’s matches since 1989, passed away last week. Michael, known as Mikey T at Plough Lane, could famously remember every score from every game he attended, as well as the exact date. Mikey watched 2,010 Wimbledon first-team consecutive matches. 💦 Wimbledon was hit with another major water incident after a burst main flooded part of Kingston Road in South Wimbledon. The incident forced Thames Water to close the road to westbound traffic between the junction with South Wimbledon and Brisbane Avenue. Wimbledon MP Paul Kohler said the two incidents shone a light on the poor situation of the region’s water infrastructure. Speaking to media, he said, "The past few days have provided more evidence our water infrastructure is at a breaking point.” Read the full article here.

🦉 Children dissected owl pellets at this month’s Wimbledon Common Nature Club, supported by the London Wildlife Trust. Children and their families learned about owls and what they eat, dissecting their pellets in a hands-on learning experience. There is only one resident owl species on Wimbledon Common, the tawny owl. Participants used gloves, tweezers, and magnifying glasses to dissect the pellets. The club meets once a month and is aimed at children ages six to 14. The next session will take place on Sunday 1 November at 9.45am. Click here for more details.

The Wimble x BookFest silent reading hour 📚

The Wimble and Wimbledon BookFest are teaming up for a “silent reading hour” next week. The event is entirely free and will take place on Saturday 17 October (5–6pm) at the Fire Station Café on Queen’s Road, Wimbledon. The first 30 people to arrive will receive a free copy of Elif Shafak’s The Island of Missing Trees (this year’s Merton Big Read). The café doesn’t have a huge capacity, so seats for the silent reading hour are on a first-come, first-served basis, although I suspect people will drop in and drop out. WeSwim: The new local club empowering disabled adults in the water 🏊🏽‍♀️

WeSwim launched in 2019 when its founder, Natasha Fleming, saw how difficult it was for adults with disabilities to access opportunities to swim and be active in the water. The volunteer-led organisation now runs clubs across London, with its newest in Mitcham. This week, I sat down with Harriet Glanville, Volunteer Coordinator, to talk about WeSwim’s mission, the work that they do and how we, as a community, can help.

What is WeSwim’s mission?

At its heart, WeSwim is about providing opportunities. Around one in five London adults is disabled, and we know that disabled people are twice as likely to be inactive. But studies have also shown that 80 per cent of adults with disabilities would like to be more active, though they often face barriers. Those barriers can be anything from the cost of living or difficulties in reaching a location to fears of being judged or even wondering who will look after their wheelchair when they are in the water.

WeSwim provides safe, accessible spaces for people with disabilities to swim. Our volunteers are in the water to support individuals and encourage people to chat, which is also a great way to reduce loneliness and isolation. We’re really focused on community and what we call “sharing the joy of swimming”. If you have ever experienced being in the water — that feeling of freedom and weightlessness — then you know just how lovely it can be. Being able to give that to someone else, or being in a group of people sharing that feeling, is an incredible privilege.

How do the sessions work?

All of our sessions are run by volunteers. Mitcham is new, so we still have staff on site to help. Once we have a few more regular volunteers, we’ll be asking some of them to step up and join the committee to run the sessions. Sessions begin with a welcoming chat to make sure that everyone feels safe and comfortable. Then the volunteers are paired up with swimmers. Our volunteers are there to help with everything, whether that be hydrotherapy exercises or just a simple chat.

Can anyone volunteer?

Yes, of course. Our volunteers are generally united by one thing: their love of swimming. Some may have backgrounds in coaching or working with disabled people, but many of them don’t. I have volunteered for WeSwim for two and a half years and began working for them a year ago. I didn’t have any experience with coaching swimming or working with disabled people. But as I say to our new volunteers, as long as you are a nice person who is kind, empathetic and good at listening, you’ll almost definitely make a great volunteer.

What makes swimming such an empowering experience?

Just the act of being in the water is beneficial for so many people. With physical disabilities, there are those obvious benefits, such as hydrotherapy; the way the water can take a person’s weight to ease muscular pains; stretching. For example, we’ve had wheelchair users who aren’t able to walk because they don’t have enough strength, but in the water (and with the support of our volunteers) they are able to move around and build up those muscles in their legs.

But it’s not just about physical disabilities. For anyone with mental health problems, water can be a regulating force. Swimming is often a meditative experience, and the water can give a sense of calmness and freedom that is really great for those with mental health problems or learning disabilities.

What can the community do to support your work?

The problem is that all of our clubs have quite long waiting lists — some even as long as a year. Though we’ve only had four sessions in Mitcham, the waiting list is already two months. We need more volunteers to get those people into the water. We’re also really flexible; we only ask volunteers to come roughly every other week.

And I think it’s important to explain just how rewarding being a volunteer is. For me, it’s the best thing I do. It’s the most joyful hour of my week, and I always leave feeling more positive and hopeful about the world. It’s so nice to be able to connect with someone directly, to be present in the same physical space as someone without your phone or other distractions, and to see the joy it brings to other people. Ninety per cent of our volunteers feel like their connection to their community has increased. People often think about volunteering as self-sacrifice, but at WeSwim I really believe that the volunteers get as much out of it as the swimmers.

How can we support one another? How can we help those struggling with mental health issues across the borough? This week, I sat down with Angeles Walford, president of the Rotary Club of Merton and a former headteacher in the borough. Scroll down to hear about Sport in Mind (a registered mental health sports charity), the importance of third spaces for young children and how education has changed over the past 20 years.

News snippets 🗞

🥘 Dishoom, the now über-famous Indian restaurant chain, is set to open one of its all-day, bar-café concept Permit Room in Wimbledon. Rumour has it that the restaurant will open at the bottom of Wimbledon Hill Road, right opposite Wagamama and Rosa’s Thai. It will act more as a café-cocktail bar, but food will be available soon. If you’re already a Dishoom fan, fret not — classics such as the Dishoom Chicken Ruby, Mattar Paneer and Prawn Moilee are all on the menu. There is already a Permit Room in Notting Hill, so check out their website to get a flavour of what’s coming to our area.

🏡 Merton Council announces an ambitious plan to deliver thousands of new homes over the next decade. The council aims to build 2,500 homes over the next ten years, 1,500 of which are to be “affordable homes”. The council has already begun building the first council homes in a generation, but with the housing crisis mounting, a more ambitious approach is needed. Plans include exploring the suitability of locations already identified for new homes, remaking Morden into the “best town centre” in London, searching for new locations for housing and working with developers and housing associations to build homes on council land. 🥕 Our friends at Wimbledon Quarter’s Rooftop Farm were featured in a lengthy article by Time & Leisure this week. Gabby McKenzie, urban farmer, spoke with the publication about how the farm benefits the local community, her hopes and plans for the future and how we can all get involved. 💦 Thousands of homes across south London, including Merton, had their water supply restored following a burst water main earlier this week. Thames Water said roughly 15,000 homes were affected on Monday, described the repair as “complex” and said that some trees had to be removed to fix the problem. Paul Kohler, the MP for Wimbledon, said he had contacted Thames Water for more information and promised to share updates with his followers on X. Read the full story here.

🎓 King’s College Wimbledon and Wimbledon High School have made it into Tatler’s “Best Public Schools in London” guide. About KCS, Tatler wrote, “There’s also a clear sense that education is about what comes next. The Futures programme looks at life beyond school, offering exposure to entrepreneurship, digital media and real-world problem solving; and from this year, a new course called World Beyond will tackle everything from the ethics of AI to oracy and medical literacy.”

About Wimbledon High School, the society magazine said, “At Wimbledon High, the girls are encouraged to take themselves seriously – but not too seriously – and individuality is actively supported rather than forced into a mould.” Read the full article here.

‘Everyone has a right to be happy’: In conversation with Angeles Walford 🤝

Last month, I was contacted by Club President of The Rotary Club of Merton, Angeles Walford. She told me that the Rotary Club of Merton and Sport in Mind — a UK mental health sports charity that uses physical activity to improve the mental wellbeing of children, young people and adults — has partnered to bring free sporting activities to the borough. This initiative sounded brilliant, so I wanted to know more.

This week, we sat down to talk about the aims of the Rotary Club, how different age groups are affected by mental health issues and the importance of education.

How did your partnership with Sport in Mind come about? And what are some of the aims?

The day that I contacted you, it had been announced that Prince William and Harry Kane were calling on the sports sector to help with suicide prevention. Months before, I had launched an event at the William Morris Pub with a similar goal. I invited leaders from the council and other interested parties to come along and listen to Craig Adams from Sport in Mind, a UK charity that uses sport to improve the lives of people with mental health struggles. The Rotary Club of Merton and Sport in Mind are collaborating to bring free sports and activities to people of all ages across the borough, particularly those with mental health or well-being issues; it’s all about building confidence, reducing isolation and supporting mental health.

I have always been greatly interested in how we can improve people’s mental health, not least when I was a headteacher in Merton 20 years ago. And through the Rotary Club, we’re looking to create a platform to help those who might not have a support network themselves. There are three target groups: younger teenagers not in education or employment, young men (ages 18-40) who are at risk of suicide, and the elderly who are isolated and vulnerable.

Let’s start with the aims for the elderly. What are you hoping to achieve?

Firstly, I think it’s really important to note that everything we’re looking to do is free. Whilst it’s true that there are often events for older people in the UK, many of them cost money. Whether it be £3 or £6, it can be a struggle to afford these activities on a regular basis.

One of the main projects we have in the pipeline involves gardening. We’re looking to use the allotment sites in Mitcham as a hub for the isolated members of our community. The idea is that anyone can pop along, speak with people, have a cup of tea or coffee and do some gardening if they want physical exercise. These allotments are a space where they can go a few times a week, get some fresh air and see new (and familiar) faces. Similarly, we’re looking to use the cafés and church spaces across the borough to host board game sessions for these same people. Over time, I’m hoping I can bring the younger demographic — those teenagers not in education or employment — along to these allotment and board game sessions, creating an intergenerational network and support group.

You mentioned you were a headteacher in Merton for many years. What are some of the problems young people are facing in our borough today?

A lot has changed since I retired from education, and a lot of those changes have been for the better. But there are still parts of Merton that are disenfranchised and underfunded, both in terms of education and mental health infrastructure. Education is a key catalyst for social mobility. If we are not providing children with the right tools and facilities to learn — both inside and outside of the classroom — then we are failing them. I was very lucky to grow up in an era where youth clubs were in abundance. Today, there are hardly any left. These third spaces are crucial for young people, particularly those who might not want to or be able to spend time at home. It’s all about the quality and quantity of provisions for young people. If we’re depriving them of those provisions, then we’re creating problems for when they reach adulthood.

And finally, can you explain a little bit about the Rotary Club and how it operates?

The Rotary is actually a very old organisation. It began in 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, but has gone on to make a huge impact globally, with over 1.2 million members across the world. It’s a non-political, non-religious organisation with the overarching aim of helping people wherever we can, whether that be in our own borough or internationally.

The Merton club only formed last year, having risen from the ashes of the Morden branch — we wanted to rebrand as ‘Merton’ because the work we do is across the borough. Throughout the year, we are raising money for various charities, hosting events and competitions for children, and supporting schemes such as Sustainable September. We don’t have much money — and everything we make goes directly to the charities we are fundraising for — but we like to connect with people and help in any way that we can. In September, we managed to raise £481.20 for Breast Cancer Now, and that was just by hosting an afternoon tea. At our heart, we’re focused on serving our community. At the Rotary Club, we believe that everyone has a right to be happy.

💥 Police were forced to evacuate the area around Wimbledon Common last week, after the discovery of a historic hand grenade. It was found at around 4.20pm on Friday 18 September and was later safely detonated in a controlled explosion. Read more here.

👟 The official route for Run South London, Merton’s brand new half-marathon, has been announced. The 13.1-mile run will take place on Sunday 14 March next year and proceeds right through the heart of Merton, past Wimbledon Common, through Wimbledon Village and alongside the All England Lawn Tennis Club. We reckon Raynes Park will be a great spot to cheer runners on for those crucial last few miles. Check out more information here.

🚘 A crash in Wimbledon town centre caused major traffic disruptions and bus diversions on Sunday. A motorcycle and a car collided at the junction between Alexandra Road, Wimbledon Hill Road and St George’s Road. It has not yet been reported if anyone sustained serious injuries. 💷 Merton Council has secured £150,000 from private developers to create a new business support fund, which it hopes will help Mitcham businesses attract new customers and “unlock” the town centre’s potential. 🥩 Argentine Asado at Orion: For one day only, Orion brings the spirit of Mendoza to Wimbledon in a special partnership event with Michelin-starred Angélica Cocina Maestra and Argentina’s most-awarded winery, Catena Zapata. Cent Anni: Is this Wimbledon’s favourite Italian? 🍝

In May 2019, Raymond De Fazio opened Cent Anni in Wimbledon Village as a tribute to his father, Angelo, and to the food he grew up eating in his family home. Since launching The Wimble, I have had dozens of locals and readers encourage me to visit and try Cent Anni’s food. Invited by the team behind Cent Anni to try their food (for free), how could I possibly say no?

I’m a little surprised at how hot it is for September. As I make my way up Wimbledon Hill Road, I begin to regret wearing a thick “formal” shirt. It’s never ideal to turn up to a restaurant looking like you’ve just clambered out of Rushmere Pond.

Cent Anni opened seven years ago and, since then, I’ve walked past a thousand times, noting the aesthetically pleasing exterior, and smelling waft upon waft of tomato, oregano, garlic and other essential Italian ingredients. But, until today, I’ve never stepped foot inside.

It’s important to point out that I have an expert guest with me — my Italian girlfriend. She’s a fastidious judge when it comes to her native cuisine but, having heard such good things about Cent Anni, I was confident it would win her approval. First impressions: Cent Anni is a lovely restaurant to look at. It manages to feel cosy and local, while also maintaining a sense of elegance and occasion. We’re lucky enough to have our own booth, and the extra sense of privacy is an added bonus.

I’m going to upset a few wine drinkers here when I say that pinot grigio is not my favourite white wine — it’s not even in my top ten white wines. It has its merits, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve had very few in my life that didn’t make me squint. So when it comes to choosing a wine, I settle on a crisp vermentino from southern Sardinia. And for £29 a bottle, I have zero complaints.

For starters, we order a sea bass ceviche and pan-fried king prawns with white wine, chilli, garlic, lemon and warm focaccia. I enjoyed them both — the sauce for the pan-fried king prawns was particularly more-ish — but I’m a sucker for ceviche, and this doesn’t disappoint. It’s fresh, and the crunch of the raw onion cuts through that soft avocado texture. I’m not always sure about avocado and fish, but in this case, it definitely works. Top marks.

The table to our left is celebrating a birthday, and a humongous cake is brought out with sparklers — a reminder that this restaurant focuses on being a beloved spot for locals as much as it does on gastronomy. For mains, I go for a veal Milanese, whilst my girlfriend opts for a crayfish and white wine risotto. Milanese is never really about presentation; it’s all about taste, which this dish has in spades. My girlfriend deems it “a proper Milanese”, a high achievement for a kitchen on English soil. Both our mains are generous portions — so much so that we struggle to finish either one.

What I also appreciate about Cent Anni is the service. The staff are knowledgeable, kind and, most importantly, know not to hover. Too many restaurants in London are about flipping tables and getting as much money from you as fast as they can. Cent Anni is nothing like this, thankfully. We’re given plenty of time to pick at our food, chat and enjoy our wine before any member of staff asks if we’d like to see the dessert menu. “There’s always room for dessert,” he advises — and he’s right.

We order a tiramisu to share and two single espressos. Some of you may be against a post-dinner coffee, but I’m a firm believer in a much-needed pick-me-up after a large meal. Yes, it might mean that I didn’t fall asleep until 1.30am. But that’s not the point.

The tiramisu is one of the stand-out dishes (second only to the sea bass ceviche). It’s very easy to make an average, passable tiramisu, but you know when you’ve got a good one. Cent Anni makes what my girlfriend calls a good — translation: excellent — tiramisu.

We leave Cent Anni satiated, happy and with plans to come back. But if a la carte isn’t your thing (or you fancy saving a bit of money), they have a lunchtime deal (Monday to Friday, 12–4pm) where two courses are £20 and three courses are just £24.

🪧 Fix the District, a campaign by local passengers of the Wimbledon District line branch, are holding a demonstration outside of Wimbledon station today. Since February, the campaign has allowed members of the public to log delays on their website. Organiser Max Barber said, “Last year, by our count of TfL's own records, the Wimbledon branch had a signal failure on 49 different days, more than three times as many as in 2015. TfL itself describes the equipment as 'life-expired' and 'prone to faults', yet the modern signalling meant to replace it was cut in 2020 and still isn't funded. Nearly half the delays passengers report to us happen while TfL's status board says 'Good Service'. Today, commuters are asking for a proper fix." The demonstration will take place from 4–7pm.

🛏 Richard Rogers’s Wimbledon home that inspired Centre Pompidou and Lloyd’s of London has been given to the National Trust. The Grade II* listed house at 22 Parkside has been lauded as one of the most “significant homes in British architectural history” and is said to have helped inspire two of the world’s most venerated modern buildings. The house was originally designed in 1967 by Richard and Su Rogers for Richard’s parents. Last week, it was revealed that the house has moved from private ownership to the National Trust. Speaking to The Standard, Ben Rogers, Richard and Su’s son, said, “As a family, we wanted to ensure that this remarkable house would be protected, cared for and shared with future generations, rather than remaining a private asset.” Read the full story here.

👷🏼‍♀️ Merton Council has announced “major” plans for remaking Morden town centre. Last week, the council revealed its plans to find the right development partner and turn the town centre into “one of the best” in London (you can’t fault them for a lack of ambition). The plans include making “a greener, more vibrant town centre, with a stronger high street, new homes, jobs and opportunities for local people, and improved places to spend time.” Read the full press release here.

Meet the poet writing about London’s best cafés ☕️

Last year, Hilde Wagenaar started a master’s degree at Kingston University. Having moved from the Netherlands to pursue her academics in London, Hilde was keen to explore the city. But getting to know a metropolis is difficult. A person needs a plan. For Hilde, that plan involved cafés. As she explored London through its unique coffee shops, a thought occurred to her: why not write about this? So that’s exactly what she did.

This week, The Wimble sat down with Hilde to discuss her new illustrated poetry collection, A Cup of Clouds and Tomorrows, and why The Fire Station Café is one of London’s best coffee spots.

What was the driving force behind this book? What made you want to write poetry about London’s cafés?

It was my first time living in London. I was incredibly excited. I come from the countryside in the Netherlands, so it’s not exactly what I’m used to. Doing my masters, I ended up studying in a lot of cafés because my room in Surbiton was a little too cramped to spend all of my time in. I realised cafés often have something that makes them unique, and I wanted to capture that in some way. Originally, I thought about just drawing them, but it occurred to me that coffee and reading go hand in hand (I’m always reading when I have a cup of coffee), so an illustrated poetry collection seemed like the perfect project.

So each poem is inspired by a different café?

Often the poems were inspired by what I was doing that day or by something that happened in the café. For example, the poem about The Fire Station Café, “Checkered Mornings”, was inspired by a conversation with Kristine, the manager. She explained to me that one of the best aspects of her job is being able to put a smile on a stranger’s face, even if just for a moment. I thought that was such a lovely sentiment — I’ve got a lot of experience working in customer service myself, so I can relate to that. I think writing has the capacity to do the same thing. So “Checkered Mornings” was really written because Kristine inspired me.

How did you pick the cafés? What made them special to you?

I picked the cafés based on their atmosphere. I prefer those spaces where you’re encouraged to sit down and relax rather than queue and rush for your takeaway. All of the cafés in this book are places where people can find some peace during their day. A lot of the cafés were found by accident. I was originally in Wimbledon visiting Wimbledon Books in the village. I thought that the area was too lovely to visit once, so I decided to look for a café to come back to (as I had already started the book). I saw photos online of The Fire Station Café, thought that it matched the vibe I was looking for and gave it a go. The minute I walked in, Kristine began speaking to me — I knew then that I had made the right choice. There are similar stories for each of the cafés featured in the book.

And lastly, how do you do those beautiful illustrations?

This was actually my first time drawing digitally! I usually prefer to paint on paper, but I was worried about the quality had I scanned them to use in the book. In the end, I settled on using my iPad. Luckily, I already had some accessories in my flat designed to make drawing on the iPad feel more authentic. I suppose the biggest benefit of using an iPad is that you can erase your mistakes as much as you want!

What does it take to climb the tallest mountain in Africa? That’s just one of the questions we put to local resident and Community First Responder Adam Reed. Adam has taken on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro at the end of this month to raise money for the London Ambulance Charity and the MS Society UK, two causes close to his heart.

The Wimble sat down with Adam last week to discuss his training, his excitement and fears, and what life is like as a Community First Responder.

🏡 One of SW19’s most beloved pubs could become community-owned by Christmas. The Trafalgar is a favourite among locals and has even been dubbed “the community’s living room” by some, but the pub has faced closure due to a lengthy redevelopment battle. Now, locals have a chance to buy shares in The Trafalgar, with the hope of securing full community ownership by Christmas. Save the Traf launched its community share offer this week, giving members of the public the chance to invest in the pub and help raise £250,000 towards the purchase of the freehold. From September 9 until November 17, members of the public will be able to purchase shares ranging from £250 to £50,000. Members will receive discounts at the bar and a birthday pint. Read more here.

🏗 The Leader of Merton Council has announced changes to his top team, with Deputy Leader Cllr Eleanor Stringer taking on the role of Cabinet Member for New Homes and Regeneration. Cllr Stringer will now lead on Merton’s work to build new homes and make Morden town centre “work better for everyone”, according to their press release. The council’s leader has also announced the creation of a new Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness Prevention, tying in with the government’s focus on helping people off the streets, which will be held by Cllr Dan Johnston. 👟 Alex Milne led the Hercules Wimbledon Athletics Club home on Sunday, finishing ninth as he gears up for the World 100km Championships later this month. Meet the Community First Responder climbing Kilimanjaro 🗻

“It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves,” is a quote often attributed to mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. It’s a great quote, but I’m sure it’s a lot harder to say when you’re 5,895 metres above sea level and in desperate need of a lie-down. But later this month, that’s exactly where local resident and Community First Responder (CFR) Adam Reed will be. This week, The Wimble sat down with Adam to talk about his community work in Wimbledon, his training routine for climbing Kilimanjaro, and why he is putting himself through this Herculean task.

Let’s start with the obvious questions. Why this challenge and why Mount Kilimanjaro?

It’s really a bucket list challenge for me. It’s as simple as “it’s there, let’s get it done”. As a teenager, I climbed Toubkal in Morocco on a school trip. I’ve also hiked in the Alps before. I’ve completed triathlons, marathons and Ironmans. So, pushing myself to certain extremes is not a new thing for me. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is about a six-to-seven-day climb. I’m taking the Machame Route — also known as the “Whiskey Route” — which is probably the most scenic way up Mount Kilimanjaro, or “Kili”.

And why have you chosen to raise money for the London Ambulance Charity and the MS Society?

They’re both causes close to my heart. My father, who passed away roughly five years ago, lived with MS for the vast majority of his adult life. I also have friends who are currently dealing with MS, and I know from first-hand experience how debilitating a disease it can be. In many ways, I’ve chosen the MS Society to honour my late father.

In the last year or so, I’ve been volunteering as a Community First Responder (CFR) for the London Ambulance Service (LAS). The London Ambulance Charity helps support the mental health and wellbeing of ambulance crews as well as providing free CPR training to the public and defibrillators for communities across the city. I chose this charity because I know just how important their work is and how much of our support they need.

What does being a Community First Responder entail?

I’ve worked in the television world for many years. I’m also a medic on sets, meaning I already had the medical skills and training to work with the London Ambulance Service. Ideally, I arrive as First Responder On Scene (FROS). From there, I start working the DRCABC algorithm, perform CPR, attach an AED and administer oxygen when appropriate, handing over and assisting the ambulance crew when they arrive. If they arrive before me, I'm available to add an extra pair of hands. I mainly respond to calls within a 12-minute drive of my front door on Haydons Road, Wimbledon. So you really are serving the community and helping people you may already know.

How are you preparing for this huge task? What does your training look like?

Unfortunately, London and the UK in general don’t have much in the way of good training environments for Kili. We’re really missing the altitude in this part of Europe. I’ve been doing a lot of leg strength exercises: squats, lunges, that sort of thing. I’m also going on long hikes with weighted packs on — Surrey Hills, Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons. Oh, and I climbed a volcano in July in Bali for good measure!

How are you feeling about the climb? Are the nerves setting in?

You take it one step at a time. The real test is the altitude. It’s going to be cold, it’s going to be dark and it’s going to be tough for that final push to the top. But I know from experience — marathons, traitholons and Ironmans — that I can grit my teeth and push through. One foot in front of the other. As long as you’re doing that, you’re making progress. They have a saying on the mountain that translates to “slow, slow”. That’s going to be the mantra for this challenge.

❤️ Merton Pride is taking place this Saturday. After a hugely successful debut last year — which attracted over 1,000 participants — the borough’s pride is back again, promising to be “bigger, bolder and more fabulous than ever”. The day will begin at 10am with a pride fair at Morden Hall Park, where anyone from the LGBTQ community, supporters, allies and families can take on AFC Wimbledon at football, check out art installations, take a Bollywood dance class or get stuck into one of the many activities set up for kids (from spider hunts to bringing a giant colourful lion to life). A little later, London’s greenest Pride March will kick off at 2pm, following the beautiful River Wandle from Morden Hall Park to Merton Abbey Mills. Later still, there’ll be a Pride Fest and After Party until 3am. This year’s headline act for the Pride Show is RuPaul Drag Race star Kate Butch, who will also be meeting fans after the show. Don’t have anyone to go with? Don’t worry: the event’s set up to encourage people to make friends locally. Just stop by the Merton Plus stand to meet one of their Glitter Guides who will take care of you (“It’s like speed dating just without the dating,” the website reads).

🔥 The cause of the fire that tore through an industrial site in Mitcham destroyed part of a house and burnt four hectares of surrounding shrubland is currently under investigation. Around 125 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze on Wednesday 26 August. The fire also closed off Mitcham Junction and Sutton, causing significant stress and disruption during rush hour. The video linked below shows the view of the fire from the sky. The London Fire Brigade warned residents to keep their windows and doors shut due to the levels of smoke produced by the fire. The fire was under control by 8.30pm, but the cause is still unknown. Read more here.

🔍 Merton Heritage Day took place on Saturday, attracting families and local history enthusiasts alike. There were talks, walks, a huge Raynes Park model railway and some rather interesting mudlark art. There were also activities from the Wandle Industrial Museum, Wimbledon Museum, Priory Trust, and Mitcham Camera Club. The project aims to celebrate the diverse multicultural histories, local stories and communities that have helped to make Merton what it is today.

🖌 Wimbledon will once again become a giant art gallery this September with the return of the Wimbledon Art Trail. Set over one weekend, this event brings together over 80 local artists and makers to exhibit their work in shops, studios, homes, gardens and businesses. ‘The battle is very much between small beer and big beer’: In conversation with Wimbledon Beer Festival 🍻

Many of our readers will already know the local gem and independent powerhouse that is The Wimbledon Brewery. In fact, one of The Wimble’s first articles was a first-person piece focusing on the brewery. But our readers may be less familiar with their annual beer fest, which celebrates its sixth year this September. Last week, I sat down with Max Eisenhardt — Head of Sales & Events at The Wimbledon Brewery — to talk about the festival and what events like these mean for independent brewers.

When did the team get the idea for a beer festival?

I suppose it was a few years in the making. I joined the brewery in 2017, helping out with a couple of taproom shifts. Then in 2019, I began doing more sales-orientated work here. But within a year, Covid arrived, and lockdowns put a bit of a kink in our plans. It wasn’t until 2022 that we really started to sell beer again, and that year we hosted our first beer festival. It just felt like a natural way to showcase what we were up to and get people visiting the brewery again.

Initially, we did the beer festival because we thought it would be fun. But we also wanted to platform some of the brilliant independently brewed beers across the UK. We don’t buy beers from big brands. This is all about supporting small and independent businesses. We want people to come together and say, “Oh, I don’t need to just drink X, Y and Z. There are plenty of good — often better — options out there.”

And what exactly does a ticket to the beer festival get you?

So it covers your entry, your glass (which you get to keep), your first beer and a brochure telling you all about the different products that we have. If you’re a CAMRA member, you’ll actually get a second beer token as well. Traditionally, our beer festivals are themed, but this year we have a few themes. The first is the “Champion Beer of Britain” regional competition. On Friday morning, around half a dozen CAMRA judges will taste six beers and score them. Then, those attending the festival will get a chance to try those beers. It’s very possible that one of those beers will go on to win the national prize.

We also have a celebration of German beer festival lagers, which are usually prepared in a similar way to English cask beers. They’re essentially unfiltered, unpasteurised live beers. We’re going to have five of those to taste — apart from Oktoberfest, I don’t think many beer festivals have that sort of line-up.

And finally, we’re launching two new beers for people to try. Oh, and I should also add that you can choose your glass size when you arrive. You either get a generous half — a two-thirds pint glass (schooner) — or a full pint. I’d recommend the schooner size because you’ll try a wider range of beers that way.

Do independent breweries like yours have strong ties to other breweries across the UK?

Absolutely. These festivals are a way of supporting one another. We get teams from breweries across the UK coming along, chatting and learning from each other. It’s not just a great day for the public; it’s a chance for brewers to get together. There’s often this misconception that small breweries are battling each other. Once upon a time, that was probably the case. But now it’s different. It’s all about support — every self-respecting independent brewer understands that. Ultimately, we’re all on the same team. We need to collaborate to stop the hedge funds and conglomerates from buying us out. The battle is very much between small beer and big beer. An event like this is an opportunity to shout about the great work that independent breweries and pubs are doing, and hopefully it’s a chance for the public to see that there are more options out there than your standard beer lineup.

🍻Is street drinking out of control in Mitcham town centre? According to one local business owner, the answer is yes. In a recent article, the cafe owner said that the problem has become so severe that he’s considering leaving the area. A contributing factor could be that police powers to confiscate alcohol have recently expired, and Merton Council reportedly has no plans to renew the borough’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ali Shabaan, owner of Tag Elezz Cafe in Mitcham, said, “Families and good people don’t come here, only alcoholics.” He also said that police are called out three to four times a week for alcohol-related ASB. “They come here and ask for empty glasses for their drinks. If I say no, they smash my windows,” Ali added. Read the full story here.

🥳 Merton students celebrated their GCSE results last week. Early figures show that national outcomes in English and maths have fallen, but indicative results suggest that Merton students are continuing to perform well. Councillor Sally Kenny, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Education, joined students at Raynes Park High School to share in their celebrations. She said, “We are incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication and determination, and we are excited to see the next steps in your journey,” adding, “My thanks also go to our teachers, school staff, families and guardians, whose support has been vital in enabling our young people to succeed and achieve the grades to continue on in their educational journey.” Read the press release here.

🔥 A fire tore through four hectares of grassland in Mitcham earlier this month. Control officers first received calls of a fire near Beddington Lane at 6.23pm on Monday 17 August. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze. By 8.10pm, crews from Wimbledon, Croydon and Norbury had the fire under control. Check out the full article here.

🚔 Which southwest London boroughs saw the most crime in July? According to figures released by the Metropolitan Police, a total of 14,442 offences were logged in July, up 5 per cent recorded in June. Lambeth had the highest number of crimes, with 3,846 reported in July. Croydon was a close second with 3,310 offences. Next were Wandsworth (2,640) and Sutton (1,269). Merton was the penultimate borough with 1,157 offences. The most common crimes in Merton were “violence against the person” (385 reports) and theft (278 reports). Kingston and Richmond-upon-Thames saw the fewest offences, with 1,086 reports. See the full data with this link.

🧯 Another fire broke out at an industrial site in Mitcham this week. The premises contain a workshop, tyre centre and scaffolding yard. The London Fire Brigade sent around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines to the scene, with the blaze spreading to about eight hectares of nearby shrubland. The cause of the fire is still unknown. From Brazil to SW19: The new superfood taking Wimbledon by storm 🍌

I have to be honest, I’d heard of açaí bowls before, but I didn’t pay them much attention. Why? Because it sounded like another Instagram trend that would surely bankrupt me and lead to disappointment. (I was worried it was going to be another matcha.) But a few weeks ago, I was talking with a colleague of mine in Wimbledon who said, “Have you popped down to Jungle Berry yet?” I hadn’t, but seeing as my office is about 30 seconds from the franchise’s new Wimbledon location, I decided to pay them a visit.

Earlier this week, I sat down with Saulo De Araujo, who runs the Wimbledon Jungle Berry store with his wife and business partner, Ana. On Saturday 5 September, Jungle Berry will open its first permanent store in SW19. But how have things been going so far at their pop-up? And, more importantly, what exactly is açaí? Here is what Saulo had to say about the “superfood”.

Let’s start with an obvious question: why Wimbledon?

We were looking to open a store in south London for about three or four months, but nothing was coming up. One day, we got a call from the Jungle Berry franchise saying they had an opportunity in Wimbledon Quarter. Did we want to take a look? I mean, this is Wimbledon we’re talking about. Of course we wanted to take a look! We signed the lease straight away … and here we are. The temporary stall in the Quarter’s Courtyard has been open for about eight weeks, but we’ll be able to do more than açaí once the permanent shop is up and running.

What is açaí and what makes it a unique food?

Açaí is what we call a “superfood”, and Jungle Berry is really a brand targeting people who want to lead healthier lives. Forget about the fries! Let’s eat something that’s genuinely good for us.

But açaí is also unique in its origin. It’s a natural berry from the Amazon Rainforest, and that’s because it needs hot temperatures and a lot of water to grow. You’ll find most açaí palm trees by the banks of the river in the Amazon. Another thing to know about açaí is that it’s rich in antioxidants. People often eat it to boost their immune systems. I’d really recommend it in winter when everyone is catching colds and the flu.

What is the açaí berry’s journey from the Amazon Rainforest to SW19?

Jungle Berry is special in this sense. Unlike most açaí brands, we actually have our own facilities in the Amazon. That means we process the berry ourselves. It also means we don’t need to add any artificial colours or flavourings, as our açaí is picked, processed and frozen within eight hours. It’s important to know that the açaí berry is a delicate fruit. It becomes grey and dry within 24 hours of picking, so it’s really important that the açaí is frozen and shipped to Europe as soon as possible. Unfortunately, a lot of açaí brands use chemicals to get the berry’s deep purple colour after the fruit has dried and turned grey. The problem there is that they’ve also lost the fruit’s natural taste. There’s a Netflix documentary coming out about this!

What has Wimbledon’s response to açaí bowls been so far?

We’ve already got a fan favourite. It’s called the “Brazilian Way”. It’s a normal serving of açaí which is then topped with paçoquinha (ground nuts, sugar and salt), strawberries, condensed milk and milk powder. It’s delicious. I think for every 10 bowls of açaí we sell, four of them are the Brazilian Way. But we’re also seeing locals try the fruit combinations in the morning before going to work or the gym. When we open the permanent store next Saturday, we’ll be able to sell Brazilian cheese bread, paninis, coffees, and protein shakes with açaí on top. I’m looking forward to being able to offer the community more.

As a new business, what is the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Hiring the right staff. It may sound easy, but it’s actually very hard to get the right fit for your business. I’ve interviewed around 22 people but have only hired two employees, and that’s because someone who works here needs to have some passion. People might not realise this, but serving açaí is actually a bit of an art form (laughs). It is! From bringing it out, making sure it never goes below the optimal temperature, and making it look pretty in the bowl.

And what is your dream for this Jungle Berry?

I’d like to build a community of regular customers who visit us every day. That would be excellent. But I suppose the most obvious dream is for this store to give more people the opportunity to try açaí and to eat a healthier or more nutritious alternative to fast food.

Is Wimbledon too dirty to bear? That’s a question implicit in the reporting done by the Local Democracy Reporting Service into the state of the town centre’s pavements (more on which in our news briefing). Angry residents may have a point — but equally, familiarity breeds contempt. 💗 Yesterday, Big Issue sadly announced the passing of Jane Burns, a long-time seller of Big Issue who once described herself as a Wimbledon “local landmark”. Jane arrived at Big Issue in 2002 after an injury and illness left her homeless. Many of our readers will remember seeing Jane outside Wimbledon station at her usual pitch. The announcement builds on the radio’s already extensive live coverage of sporting events. 🧽 The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) visited Wimbledon town centre last week to assess the condition of the pavements first-hand. According to the reporter, a “clear divide” could be seen outside Wimbledon Quarter between the areas maintained by shopping centre staff, which had recently been jet washed, and the adjoining council-owned pavement “which was blackened with stains”. Merton Council later confirmed that they do not have a statutory duty to pressure wash pavement throughout the year.

The council said cleaning work was scheduled post Championships but that other sporting events — chiefly, the World Cup — have put additional strain on the public realm due to increased footfall. Read more here.

I’d like to see more of a village vibe in the town centre. It would be lovely to see more seating areas, potted plants and cosy spaces to relax. There’s more of that in the village, but I’d like to see it down here too.

We could really do with some late-night venues. I don’t just mean bars. I mean clubs: places to dance until late. My friends and I have to go to Soho for a big night out. The closest area with a few clubs and late-night bars is Clapham, but even then we’re getting Ubers home. Last week, we took an Uber back to Wimbledon from Soho, and it cost us £65. If there were a few clubs here, we’d have just stayed in our area.

I think it would be great if we could sort out the schoolchildren fighting or causing problems in the town centre. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to hang out there and enjoy themselves, but the antisocial behaviour needs to stop.

How busy was Wimbledon Town Centre during the tennis? 📈

The tennis is over and the dust has settled. But just how busy was Wimbledon’s town centre this year? The Wimble spoke with Love Wimbledon and Wimbledon Quarter to get the data.

According to Love Wimbledon’s footfall counters, the town centre saw 330,000 visitors across the first and 305,000 visitors across the second. The first week was a record week for footfall, though the second week saw a slight decline on 2025’s numbers (most likely due to the heat wave).

Wimbledon Quarter also saw an increase in footfall this year. The Quarter recorded 193,245 people for the first week and 189,682 for the second; a 9% increase on 2025’s numbers.

🚨 Operation Haldor: the Metropolitan Police has carried out a week-long operation targeting gangs, organised crime groups and violent offenders across Merton, resulting in 20 arrests and the seizure of weapons and drugs worth roughly £27,000. 🍕 Pizza Pilgrims are opening in Wimbledon on Tuesday 18 August. To celebrate, the pizza giant is giving away 1,000 slices of free pizza on Wednesday 12 August from 12pm. ☀️ It was announced last week that Wandsworth Council would be pulling its temporary accommodation residents out of Britannia Point — the controversial tower block in Colliers Wood — after residents reported high temperatures and faulty cooling systems during the heatwave. Management at Britannia Point insist the air conditioning system is fully operational. Other councils are now considering alternative housing options for temporary accommodation households within Britannia Point, with some reportedly saying they will no longer use the tower block for placements in the future. 👩‍👦 The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman have found Merton Council at fault for causing a local family “frustration and uncertainty” by failing to review the mother’s support needs. The mother was reportedly left without an answer for nearly a year on whether she was entitled to more support, despite repeatedly telling her Merton Council that she was struggling. Is this capoeira school one of Wimbledon’s best kept secrets? 🪘

In 2003, André Luiz Vieira founded Arte Pura Capoeira in Lisbon, Portugal. Fifteen years later, he and his wife, Ingrid, brought the project to London with the goal of sharing Brazilian culture through capoeira, music and education. André began “playing” capoeira at around eight years old in Recife, Brazil. Growing up in a community affected by violence and poverty, André says capoeira is what gave him discipline, hope and a sense of purpose.

Ingrid — who runs the capoeira school with André, started as an adult. She also holds a degree in dance from her time in Lisbon. A few weeks ago, the couple got in touch with me and asked if I’d like to pop down to South Park Gardens and watch a practice. So that’s exactly what I did.

But first, two confessions. For one, I’m not technically a “novice” when it comes to capoeira. When I was around eight years old, I actually spent a year learning capoeira on Saturdays in a studio behind the Nando’s in Streatham. The second: I wasn’t very good. But there’s always room for improvement, right?

It’s a very warm Monday evening as I join Arte Pura in South Park Gardens. I realise that I’m probably overdressed for the occasion; boots aren’t a particularly smart shoe choice when the activity involves kicking towards another person’s head.

I meet Ingrid, André and the rest of their capoeira students. “Will you be joining in?” asks Ingrid. “I’ll give it a go,” I say. “But I don’t think I’ll be doing any backflips.”

The group walks into the open space as André begins to lead the class. We start with some light stretching before moving into the ginga — the fundamental rhythmic footwork of capoeira that I can only describe as a dancing sidestep. I partner with Ingrid so that she can show me the ropes. I remember the ginga from my erstwhile capoeira days, but that’s about it, and I’ve lost the rhythm entirely. But Ingrid is a good teacher, and with a concerted effort, I’m able to pick it up again.

I ask Ingrid why they train outside during the summer. “One thing that’s really nice about training outside is seeing people’s curiosity,” she says. Because capoeira combines movement, live music and singing, it naturally catches people’s attention. In the background, one of the students is playing the atabaque: a beautiful, tall Afro-Brazilian drum that is often used in capoeira. “By training in a public space, we’re giving people the opportunity to discover capoeira, many for the very first time. Every roda becomes a chance to share a little bit of Brazilian culture with the local community.”

Don’t worry, I asked what a “roda” is too. A roda is the circle in which capoeira comes to life. Capoeiristas form a circle and participants take turns performing inside. There’s more to it than that, but that’s the general idea.

After we have warmed up and practised the ginga, we form our roda. This is where I get to really see the group. “One of the things I love most is that our classes bring together people who would probably never have met otherwise,” says Ingrid. And she’s absolutely right, the group is diverse in every sense of the word. “We have children whose families come from Brazil, the UK, Portugal, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Poland and many other countries. Adults range from complete beginners to experienced practitioners, from university students to healthcare professionals and teachers. Everyone trains together, supports one another and learns not only capoeira but also a little about each other’s cultures.”

I watch as a father and son enter the roda and begin the “jogo” (the game). They move around one another: ducking, weaving, kicking, rolling. Someone else jumps in and the father returns to the rim of the roda. This is how it works: when a person wants a turn inside the roda, they wait for a break or signal in the music and tap into the game. Everything about capoeira is fluid, from the music to the movements. Students only stop moving when they grab a sip of water.

Capoeira is a unique martial art. Every session is different. During one class, students might practise acrobatics. In another, they might learn Portuguese songs, play percussion instruments and work with a partner to solve movement challenges. “You’re constantly thinking, listening and responding to another person, so capoeira exercises both the body and the mind,” Ingrid tells me.

The session comes to an end. We stand in the roda once more. André holds the berimbau in his hand — a single-string African musical bow and the most important instrument in capoeira — and gently plays. He speaks in Portuguese about the importance of capoeira across the world, how there are communities in every pocket on the globe. He tells the group about capoeira being a mindset. There’s something almost spiritual about the way he describes capoeira. Ingrid informs me that today is National Capoeira Day (“Dia do Capoeirista”), a day to honour and celebrate the practitioners of the Afro-Brazilian martial art. “It’s the best day for you to have done it,” she says.

Before I leave, I ask André and Ingrid what their plans are for growing the school in the coming years. “Our vision goes beyond simply increasing the number of classes,” they tell me. “Ultimately, we dream of creating our own Brazilian Cultural Centre in London. We imagine a place where people can experience much more than capoeira.” She explains that alongside capoeira and Brazilian dance classes, they would like to offer music, percussion, cultural workshops and activities like screen printing.

“More importantly, we want it to be a place that helps people grow, not only as capoeira practitioners, but as individuals,” she continues. “A space where children, young people and adults can build confidence, develop life skills, connect with others and experience the richness of Brazilian culture in a welcoming community.”

That dream doesn’t seem far off. Arte Pura in Wimbledon is already a place that helps people grow as capoeiristas and individuals. It is also a space where people, young or old, can build confidence and create a community. From just one session, that much is clear.

I leave the group and head back to Wimbledon Town Centre. I think back to my early experiences of capoeira. If those sessions had been anything like Arte Pura Capoeira’s, I’m sure I would have continued with the martial art. But that’s in the past. What I can say now is that Arte Pura Capoeira is worth a visit. If you are even a little bit curious about capoeira, head to their website and book yourself a taster session. In 2024, two lovely things happened in quick succession: The Wimble launched, and we received an email from a local artist, Fiona Wyse. Fiona ran (and still runs) a textiles and sculpture studio in Wimbledon called Ryka Designs — now, two years later, Fiona is among a handful of tapestry artists to have her work shown at this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

This week, The Wimble met with Fiona at her home to talk about her selected work, “Summer Dive”, and what it takes to make it as an artist.

🧑🏼‍🚒 A fire broke out at Belgrave Walk in Mitcham on Saturday. Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters responded to a fire involving a row of townhouses converted into flats. The fire spread across all three floors and into the roof spaces of the buildings. At 6.15pm, it was reported that the council opened a rest centre at Mitcham Parish Centre in Church Road, Mitcham (opposite St Peter & St Paul Church), where council officers and councillors provided support for residents who had to leave their homes. On Sunday, the roads in the area were reopened whilst council officers worked alongside firefighters to assess the structure of the building. The rest centre was closed later that day, with the council offering temporary accommodation to residents who were unable to return to their homes. The cause of the fire has not been established yet. Wimbledon BookFest has announced that broadcaster and author Clare Balding will appear at this year's festival for a special live recording to launch the National Literacy Trust's brand-new podcast – The Joy of Reading – during the National Year of Reading. The new programme also includes conversations on science with Jim Al-Khalili, stories of survival and resistance in Afghanistan with Zahra Joya, medieval history with Janina Ramirez, fiction with Alexandra Potter and M. John Harrison, and much, much more. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks for updates and tickets. The festival will run from Thursday 15–Sunday 25 October.

🎉 A Korean-language station sign has now been permanently installed inside a new waiting room at New Malden station. The sign, written in the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, is the Korean transliteration of New Malden. The waiting room on Platform 4 also features Korean artwork. With 20,000 of Korean heritage living in New Malden, the area is home to the largest Korean community in Europe. Councillor Robert Kim said, “There was a time in Korea’s history when our language and even our names were suppressed. To now see Hangeul proudly displayed in our town and to celebrate Korean culture and art freely in this space reflects how far we have come.” Read more in ianVisits.

🏡 Merton Council are set to make borough-wide HMO planning rules permanent. The council has approved a recommendation to permanently ensure that anyone converting a home into a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) will require planning permission. According to the press release, “This means the council will be able to check new HMO proposals properly before they go ahead, looking at things like whether homes are well designed, with enough space and facilities for the people living there.” The decision follows a six-week public consultation, in which 82% of the 50 responses received supported making the rules permanent.

The local textile artist selected for this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 🖼

Fiona Wyse founded her local textile studio, Ryka Design, in 2020, creating large-scale abstract wall hangings, rugs and mirrors inspired by landscape, colour and texture. Over time, however, Fiona has found herself increasingly drawn to tapestry. Back in 2024, The Wimble joined Fiona in her studio and home to talk about the design of her property. You can read that article here. But today we’re celebrating Fiona for a different reason.

This year, Fiona’s tapestry “Summer Dive” was chosen out of 18,000 submissions to be exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2026. The tapestry is a large, hand-woven artwork inspired by the simple pleasure of plunging into a cool pool on a hot summer’s day. This week, The Wimble sat down with Fiona to talk about the process and her advice to other local artists looking to expand their portfolios.

Let’s start with the art itself. How did this tapestry come about?

The design of this piece was actually created in lockdown. Initially, I created a rug from the design. But then last year, I broke my wrist, and I couldn’t do any more tufting because my [tufting] gun is too heavy. So I decided to go back to tapestry, which was also a really good therapy for my fingers. What’s interesting about tapestry is its slowness. Unlike tufting, where ideas can develop quickly, tapestry requires patience and commitment. Every decision is woven in by hand. And tapestry was actually the discipline I studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, though “Summer Dive” was my first big tapestry since the 2000s.

What does the selection process for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition look like?

The title for this year’s summer exhibition is “interconnectedness”, but it’s a fluid title. It’s really up to the curator to interpret your work. Artists apply in January or February, and the RA has a cap of around 18,000 submissions. Then they whittle that down to 4,000 pieces. At 4,000, the artists are invited to bring their work to the RA for further consideration, and then you wait. I’ve applied four times and never been accepted, so it was a little surreal to see the email.

What is your process for creating art? What is it that draws you to tapestry?

My process is often high energy. I take inspiration from the world around me, from nature, from friends, from music. Today, my practice explores tapestry as a process of translation. In terms of the process, it usually starts with sketches, photographs, painted gestures and lino cuts. These are all translated into woven form.

But in terms of recent inspiration, I’ve also been really interested in the stories behind my friends’ tattoos. Finding out the history behind a tattoo and incorporating a person’s story, emotions and thoughts into the artwork is something I’m looking into at the moment.

What does this achievement mean for you? And what advice would you give to other local textile artists looking to make similar waves in the art world?

Being selected by the RA is a huge honour, and I’m beyond delighted. I think it’s really important to remember that a lot of artists work independently, so it can be hard to know if you’re moving in the right direction. This RA’s recognition is just a lovely affirmation that my work is moving in the right direction. Although, saying that, I did manage to track down my old art tutor from 30 years ago on Instagram and ask him a few questions, which was lovely!

When it comes to textile art, keep trying new things and keep applying to different exhibitions. You’re going to face rejection. I’d had a few rejections earlier this year, so the RA’s acceptance really came at the perfect time. But rejection is part of the process, especially for textile artists. There are something like 1,800 pieces on the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition’s walls. About 1 per cent of those are textile designs. But we are really beginning to weave our way into these spaces! I’d also really recommend joining a few organisations. I joined the British Tapestry Group and the Society of Designer Craftsmen. It’s groups like these that can help you to feel less alone. These groups also put on exhibitions, so it’s a great way to showcase your art.

🏗️ Over 1,000 people objected to a Kingston and Merton development of 586 homes, but City Hall has pushed it through anyway. The plans from SGN and Berkley Homes will see three gasholders on protected land in Motspur Park demolished for 586 homes, with some of the buildings reaching 16 storeys tall. Despite fierce opposition, Jules Pipe, London’s Deputy Mayor for Planning, approved the scheme on Tuesday after ruling it would “not result in substantial harm” to the open land. Representatives from Kingston and Merton councils were joined by objecting residents on Tuesday in arguing that the height and scale of the development were too great and that local infrastructure would not be able to handle such an influx of people. The application received 1,190 objections and 52 letters of support across Kingston’s and Merton's websites. Click here to read the full story.

🔥 Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled a fire at a recycling centre on Weird Road last Saturday. Around 80 tonnes of household waste was involved in the fire. Authorities think the most probable cause of the fire was a lithium-ion battery – a type of rechargeable battery found everywhere from smartphones and laptops to cameras, e-cigarettes and electric vehicles . A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "Lithium-ion batteries and electricals with hidden lithium-ion batteries should not be placed in the same bins as your regular rubbish or recycling. Instead, check with the retailer or your local authority's website for the safest way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries in your area and reduce the risk of fires occurring. The brigade was called at 1.04pm and had the blaze under control by 2.50pm.

💚 Merton gained another Green Flag — the internationally recognised sign of excellence for parks — bringing the borough’s total number of flags to 11. The new Green Flag for the Mitcham park means Merton has almost doubled the number of Green Flag parks since 2024. Green Flags recognise well-managed, welcoming, and sustainable outdoor spaces for the local community. The awards are given after a meticulous judging process which awards marks for the above criteria as well as how involved the local community is in the running of the park.

The magical bookshop turning book buying on its head 🧚

In April 2025, Jude Temple opened Only Make Believe, a bookshop in the heart of Merton Abbey Mills. Just over a year later - in May - Jude’s moved the shop into an even larger location within the same building, such is the demand. This week, we sat down to talk about the shop’s unique approach to bookselling.

Let’s start with the shop’s origin — what made you want to open such a unique space?

I was a local primary school teacher for most of my life, but owning a bookshop was always an itch. I lost both of my parents, and my sister and I were sitting around one day reminiscing about the fact that they never did move to Penzance like they wanted. I could imagine my children saying something similar about me: “Mum never did get her bookshop…” So that was the real driving force behind it, and I just jumped in with both feet.

And what has the experience of going from being a local resident to a shopkeeper been like?

It’s been extraordinary. I can’t tell you how clueless I was when I opened this place. I stood in the empty unit and wondered aloud, “Where do booksellers get books from? How does it work?” It’s been such a steep learning curve. At the beginning, that’s quite a good thing because you know you know nothing.

I’ve been blown away by the community’s response to the bookshop. We all know that people can buy books online and have them delivered within 24 hours. But people really want to interact and talk with other people. They want to know who they’re buying from and support the local community. Early on, people would pop in and want me to advise them, to talk to them about books, which is just the best part of the job.

And relationships build. You start to know people by their names and their children’s names and the names of their pets. Soon you’ve built a community with children running in and showing you their star of the week certificate from school.

What made you choose to almost exclusively stock fiction?

I think it was mostly because I saw the bookshop as an absolute passion project, and my passion lies within fiction. Fiction has shaped my life, taught me things and been an endless source of joy. The first unit was a tiny space, and I realised that I could buy loads of non-fiction but that it might not meet people’s needs. I know where I am with fiction: I feel it, I understand it and I can talk about it. I do order non-fiction when a customer requests a certain book. We also stock a small selection of children’s non-fiction because it’s just so good.

It was actually one of my children, Arden, who came up with the name for the shop. When I told her that we would only stock fiction, she said, “Oh, so it’s only make believe.” I knew then that we had the name.

The shop has a very unique layout, particularly your choice to arrange the books by colour rather than by author’s surname. How has that changed the buying experience?

I wanted the whole shop to feel quirky and whimsical, and I wanted people coming into the space to experience something. A lot of bookshops tend to feel quite corporate, and I really didn’t want that. Arranging the literary fiction by colour came from a moment of whimsy, but now we’ve become known for it. People tell me that it encourages them to really peruse the shelves, to feel absorbed by the space. It also encourages people to find something unusual or something they haven’t thought about, and that’s what a bookshop should aim to do.

It’s come to my attention that you have two resident fairies living in the shop. When did they move in?

When we relocated to the new shop, the fairies moved in too. One day, a fairy door appeared. Children started writing letters and drawing pictures for them, so we bought the fairies a little postbox. Then, much to our astonishment, the fairies began to reply. We found out their names were Chapter and Paige. Now the children write to the fairies, and the fairies write back!

How has the space grown since you founded the shop?

I think it’s mostly been through the events we run. We host a toddler story time twice a week. It’s completely free. Parents don’t have to book — we all know how unpredictable life with a toddler can be. So people just turn up on a Thursday or Friday morning at 9.30am. We’ve also always got children’s toys out on the carpet. On market days, Merton Abbey Mills can get quite crowded, so we’ve noticed a lot of people popping in on those days for a quiet 20 minutes of browsing, chatting and relaxing. We started a book club a little while ago. At the beginning, we had eight attendees. Now we’re up to 25, and we’re launching a fantasy-specific book club too.

There’s a physicality to bookshops. People spend a lot of time on screen, and I think many of us want to move away from that. People want to come together and share a common moment with one another — in our case, that’s through books.

The tennis is over, and normality has returned to SW19. Well done to both Linda Noskova and Janek Sinner for their victories this weekend.

This week, we’ve got a short feature on what it was like to judge the Town Centre’s first official Tennis Window Competition. This year, I was lucky enough to be invited by Love Wimbledon to co-judge the competition. It was tough, it was fun and it was sweaty. Scroll down to read about how it went.

⚠️ Dozens of fish have been found dead in Wimbledon Park Lake. Initial investigations by the Environment Agency and Thames Water indicate that the likely cause is the prolonged period of exceptionally hot weather, meaning the pond has suffered from depleted oxygen levels. Council officers spent the weekend removing the dead fish from the 20-acre lake in order to protect water quality. In a statement, the council wrote, “There is no evidence to suggest that pollution is responsible, although investigations and water quality monitoring are continuing.” Click here to read more.

🏠 The Daily Mail has published a “special report” surrounding the bedsits on Elsenham Street, Wimbledon. According to the Mail, residents have found themselves locked in a battle over a three-bedroom property on the street that was snapped up by developers for £1.3 million and then converted into six separate bedsits. The article also notes that neighbours fear it is a “Trojan Horse” project, opening the door to an influx of more bedsits. Read more here.

🎾 Last week, Save Wimbledon Park published “There must be a better way”, a briefing and rival plan by local architect Ken McFarlane in collaboration with tennis “master planner” and architect Richard Rees , which SWP says will avoid breaching the 1993 covenants, reduce the environmental impact of the development and deliver a lakeside walkway. What did it take to judge the Wimbledon Window Dressing Competition 🏆

This year marked the 13th anniversary of the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s (AELTC) annual Wimbledon Window Dressing Competition. It was also the first year that the long-running competition expanded to include businesses in Wimbledon Town Centre and Southfields.

A few months ago, I was contacted by Love Wimbledon to ask if I would be a judge for the town centre’s arm of the competition. I said yes without hesitation, telling them it was a huge honour, and awaited further instruction. Then came a meeting where the five scoring categories were explained to us: creativity and impact, sustainability, reflection on their business, entertainment value / sense of humour, and the overall tennis theme. I printed out the scorecard, wore a breathable shirt so as not to melt in the heat and hit the streets of SW19.

There were 35 entries in the town centre this year, with seven finalists, two runners-up and one winner (though the overall winner for the entire competition was judged separately). I realised the task would take more than an afternoon, not least because I wanted to ensure I had adequate time to digest what each business had created.

Without further ado, the finalists were the following:

• GoodGood Studio

• Served Café

• LUSH Cosmetics

• Vodafone

• Royal Trinity Hospice

• Little Gym

• Wimbledon School of English

Particular mention goes to the Wimbledon School of English for its reflection of their business and entertainment value. I’d also like to shout out Served Café for their excellent and creative window display. I especially liked the distressed multitasking pigeon sweating to hold up the bunting with his beak while keeping a basket of strawberries aloft in his claws – it felt a little like being a Wimble writer, trying to cover all aspects of the Championships during its running time.

I have no doubt that the other judges struggled as much as I did to pick the finalists. So many businesses put in a cracking effort this year — let’s hope that we can build on this momentum next year.

When it came to judging the runners-up, I was struck by M&S’ playful ‘Game Set Snack’ pun and the visual impact of the strawberries and tennis balls. But I suppose we should expect nothing less from M&S; after all, they always put in a good shift for the tennis (Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme Sandwich, I’m looking at you). Independent family-friendly Mediterranean restaurant Aimer also did a great job at capturing the essence of the competition: fun and creativity. Well done to both businesses.

But in the end, there could only be one winner: Elys. The department store really put on a show this year. Their display, which spanned several windows, was clever, thoughtful, fun, creative and captured the essence of the tennis perfectly. In an official press release from the All England Lawn Tennis Club, it was noted that “the judges were hugely taken by the imagination the team at Elys used to bring their whole window estate together in a range of themed displays that celebrate the spirit of tennis in Wimbledon, while showcasing the beautiful, seasonal products they are currently championing in the store itself. A worthy winner, and another recognition for Wimbledon’s famous department store during its 150th anniversary year.”

I couldn’t have put it better myself.

In the end, Elys won in the Town Centre, Southfields Footcare in Southfields and John D Wood in Wimbledon Village, with the overall competition winner being Knight Frank in Wimbledon Village. Huge congrats to all who participated, particularly those commended for their efforts.

After the dust of The Championships settled this weekend, The Wimble reached out to Craig Hurring, Chief Executive of Love Wimbledon, to get his thoughts on the Town Centre’s first-ever official Tennis Window Competition. He said, “Love Wimbledon was thrilled to get official recognition for Wimbledon Town Centre’s windows from AELTC for the first time this year and loved the ingenuity and creativity we saw on display. More than 50 businesses in the Town Centre celebrated the tennis in their windows — shops and offices alike — with 35 entering the official competition… Thank you to all the town centre businesses for getting into the spirit of tennis and to our judges for their thoughtful and considered feedback, and congratulations to Elys for winning our inaugural contest with their beautiful tennis-themed displays.”

This week, we’ve got an inside look at the military stewards for Wimbledon’s Championships. 2026 marks 80 years since Armed Forces personnel began volunteering at the tennis. The Wimble spoke with Lieutenant Commander Christopher (Chris) Boucher, Officer in Charge for the military stewards, about how the armed forces came to become involved in the tennis tournament and the role they play there today.

📉 Wimbledon locals are struggling to rent their homes out for this year’s Championships. It’s been reported that locals can earn up to £20,000 renting out their homes for The Championships fortnight, but according to one report, there has been less demand since the 300 line judges recruited from all over the world to arbitrate the results were axed in 2025 and replaced with cameras. 🎨 David Williams-Ellis, stepfather of the property developer and Princess Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, has been revealed as the sculptor behind the forthcoming bronze statue at the All England Tennis Club. The statue of Andy Murray was announced last year, but plans for its execution have otherwise remained a closely guarded secret. Telegraph Sport met with Williams-Ellis, who confirmed that it was modelled in clay before being cast in bronze. He also said the statue would be a fifth bigger than Andy Murray’s actual 6ft 3in frame. For more details, check out the article here.

Reporting for duty: What do the military stewards do at Wimbledon?

It’s been 80 years since Armed Forces personnel began volunteering as stewards at The Championships. During the Second World War, The Championships were suspended. However, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) remained open to contribute to the war effort, acting as a base for the British Home Guard, fire and ambulance services and as a decontamination unit. On 11 October 1940, Centre Court was struck by a German bomb, decimating 1,200 seats. It would take several years before the damaged part of the competitor’s stand was rebuilt.

In 1946, The Championships resumed — the same year that the Armed Forces first offered demobilised personnel as stewards. These stewards were there to guide members of the public around the war-damaged grounds and to help The Championships to get back on its feet.

Fast forward 80 years, and around 500 military personnel continue to steward The Championships. But what does it take to execute such a seamless operation year in, year out?

Lt Cdr Christopher (Chris) Boucher joined the Royal Navy in 1988, working his way through the ranks to Warrant Officer and eventually Lieutenant Commander. In 2015, 27 years after joining the military, Chris volunteered as a steward at Wimbledon. He spent two years working on the gangways helping members of the public before taking on more senior positions. In 2022, he stepped into the role of running the military stewards’ operation at Wimbledon, a position known as the Officer in Charge.

“When I started in 2015, it was heavily reliant on people who had done it before,” Chris tells me. “I really wanted to make the stewarding process more inclusive. Now, our military stewards are split equally between those who have done it before and those who have not. We’ve also increased the number of stewards at The Championships. In 2015, 276 Armed Forces personnel volunteered. Last year, that number was up to 504.”

Armed Forces personnel must use part of their allocated leave if they want to volunteer at Wimbledon. “This year had the highest number of applicants ever, with 1,400 personnel applying,” Chris says. “We’ve also got about 460 people in reserve in case service members drop out before The Championships. We get people dropping out all of the time because of promotions, injuries, deployment and specific operations at a short notice.”

What does a day in the life of a military steward look like, I ask.

“Everyone arrives by 9am, and the earliest finish is 6.30pm. The whole fortnight is quite an arduous process for those who haven’t done it before,” he explains. “I always tell our new stewards to pace themselves throughout The Championships because by the time it’s over, you’ll be too tired to bend down and pick up your water bottle. After all, you’re standing on your feet for up to 10 hours a day in often very warm conditions.”

When not performing their duties, the rest of the stewards spend their time in an area known as The Championships Steward Village: a huge porta-building behind Henman Hill. There, the stewards can use the shower and dining facilities (they are treated to three meals a day provided by the AELTC’s chefs), and locker rooms.

The overarching focus for a military steward is guest experience. While members of the public often think it’s about security, that isn’t really the case, although the role does involve ensuring the public’s safety.

And the military stewards take their role incredibly seriously. “It’s a perfect opportunity to show the British Armed Forces in a great light on the world stage. I treat the tournament with the same ceremonial standards of a state funeral. The hair, shoes and uniform need to be perfect,” he explains.

I ask if there’s a sense of pride in stewarding at Wimbledon. “Absolutely,” says Chris. “Because this year marks our 80^th anniversary, I’ve actually asked many of the stewards to bring us any stories they have relating to Wimbledon. So far, the response has been great. There’s one story in particular that has stuck out to me this year. In February, a man and his twin brother were selected as stewards for this year’s tournament. They were both very excited, they even had a light-hearted rivalry: one of them being an Alcaraz fan and the other supporting Sinner. In March, I got an email from him to say that his brother had sadly passed away in a road traffic accident. So this year, he’s coming to honour his brother and keep his memory alive. I just think that’s incredibly powerful.”

For many of our Armed Forces service members, volunteering at The Championships is an honour. If you are lucky enough to be watching the tournament in person this year, do make a point of speaking to them. After all, they’re there to help you. And even if you don’t need help, there’s no harm in asking how their day is going.

The Championships are well underway, which can only mean one thing: Wimbledon is swamped. It’s hot. It’s busy. It’s even a little bit overwhelming. But, crucially, it’s also Wimbledon’s buzziest time of year.

This week, we’re answering the perennial question: What makes the Wimbledon strawberry so special? We spoke with Marion Regan — owner of Hugh Lowe Farms, which has been supplying Wimbledon with strawberries for three decades — about their fruit’s journey to greatness.

🚳 Merton council has requested an urgent meeting with e-bike operators Forest and Lime as The Championships get underway. The council is threatening to seize Lime and Forest bikes after large numbers were left strewn across Wimbledon’s pavements this week. The Championships is Wimbledon’s busiest time of year, so it should come as no surprise that the designated parking bays reached their capacity within the first few days of the tournament. The council is now seeking an urgent meeting with the e-bike operators to get the situation under control. Read more about that story here. But tennis aside, The Wimble has received plenty of email over the past two years about the e-bike problem in the borough. Should we ban e-bikes? Or is the issue not the bikes, but the lack of parking bays and should we petition for more? Let us know your thoughts below.

🥳 Navy veteran, Cllr Nedra Daniel, has been appointed Merton’s Armed Forces Champion, taking over the role from former Cllr Dennis Pearce. According to the council’s press release, “The Armed Forces Champion has the responsibility to be a voice, advocate and first point of contact in the council for our armed forces community. This includes veterans, serving personnel, reservists and military families. The role also involves promoting the Armed Forces Covenant – to which the council is a signatory – as well as raising awareness of obligations under the Armed Forces Act 2021, the NHS constitution and other relevant legislation.” Born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, she moved to the UK aged 25 in order to join the Royal Navy. Across her decade of service, she was posted to three seagoing vessels – HMS Ark Royal, HMS Illustrious and HMS Defender. The appointment came just before the borough’s annual Armed Forces Day parade last Saturday.

🏥 St George’s Hospital has issued a warning for this year’s Championships. With over 500,000 people flocking to the borough over the fortnight, St George’s has warned that it may lead to increased demands for their emergency services, not least as we experience record-breaking temperatures. Last week’s heatwave proved just how important it is to keep safe in the sun. Click here to read more.

🌲 Have your say on where Merton’s new pocket parks should be. Pocket parks are small parks that are accessible to all residents. They are usually very small – no larger than the size of a parking space – but some can be as big as a tennis court. Pocket parks have been shown to tackle fly-tipping by bringing more people into the area and making the space look managed and cared for. The surprising journey of the Wimbledon strawberry 🍓

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Wimbledon: immaculate tennis whites, sunburnt faces on Henman Hill or the Queue?

Or is it the booze? After all, Wimbledon is the single largest annual sporting catering operation in Europe. In 2024, more than 314,000 glasses of Pimm’s were consumed at the Championships, not to mention 25,000 bottles of champagne. That’s a lot of tipple.

For me — as I would wager is the case for many tennis fans across the globe — there is one enduring symbol of the Championships that transcends them all: strawberries (and cream, of course). But how are more than 1.5 million berries delivered to the stadium every year? What is the process of cultivating the world’s most famous strawberry?

Before this year’s Championships began, The Wimble sat down with the owner of Hugh Lowe Farms, Marion Regan, to understand the journey of the Wimbledon strawberry.

Hugh Lowe Farms has been supplying the Championships with their delicious Kent-grown strawberries for over three decades. It’s a relationship born out of trust, consistency and, crucially, proximity — the farm in Mereworth, Kent is only 31.5 miles from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Over time, the family-run farm has shown that they can deliver the volume and quality needed for an event as prestigious as Wimbledon.

But just how meticulous is the process from farm to table? “I look for strawberries that are fully ripe, evenly coloured, nicely shaped and firm enough to travel beautifully,” says Marion. “Our pickers know that Wimbledon fruit needs to look attractive in the punnet and eat beautifully too, so they are selecting for freshness, colour, flavour and consistency all at once.” The berries that they are choosing are intended to be eaten within hours. Strawberries at Wimbledon are only served on the day that they are picked. Any berries leftover are frozen and then made into Wimbledon’s strawberry jam, which is enjoyed throughout the year and features in their afternoon tea and Victoria sponge cake.

Before speaking with Marion, I was under the impression that there was only one variety of strawberry picked for the Championships. This is not the case. The strawberries are picked with flavour in mind first, but also with appearance, reliability and how well the fruit can handle the picking and packing process. The exact mix changes from season to season because varieties perform differently depending on the weather. A big part of the farm’s job is matching the right variety to the right moment in the season.

Delivering huge quantities of strawberries to the stadium each day for two weeks is no small operation. “The process starts very early,” Marion explains. “Our pickers begin at first light, when both the fruit and the people harvesting it benefit from the cooler temperatures. During the Wimbledon period, a substantial team is involved across picking, quality control, packing and transport. Because we know the order pattern, berries can be picked especially for the Championships, then taken quickly to the cooler where they are chilled, weighed, checked and then packed and despatched to SW19. It’s a highly organised operation rather than a last-minute rush.”

Each night throughout the Championships is all about being ready for the morning: checking orders, reviewing which fields are best for the following day, and making sure labour, transport, cooling and packing are all lined up. “Those mornings are busy, of course, but they are also deeply satisfying, because they bring together months of work into a single, well-executed chain from plant to punnet to plate,” says Marion.

It’s worth highlighting that Wimbledon’s strawberry production is about much more than the Championships fortnight. It’s a year-round discipline of planning, planting, nurturing and watching. The crop at Hugh Lowe Farms is established from young plants rather than seed. As the season progresses, the farm constantly monitors the weather, fruit development, flavour and plant health. Of course focus sharpens nearer the Championships, but it really is a process that requires time, precision and patience.

British weather is about as capricious as it can get. Too much light, too much rain, heat spikes or unseasonal cold spells can all have a detrimental effect on the crop.

I ask Marion how the cultivation technology has changed over the past 30 years. People’s perceptions of food have shifted in recent times, with a greater focus on sustainability. In 2019, plant-based cream was made available at the Championships to ensure that everyone could enjoy the tennis-based tradition.

“Certain changes have been enormous, but strawberry growing is in some ways unchanged — for example, the focus on freshness and careful selection process by hand,” she explains. That said, the farm is very focused on sustainability. “It runs through the way we farm,” says Marion. “We grow our berries in recycled coir, derived from waste coconut husks rather than peat-based growing media. We use biological controls wherever possible, encouraging beneficial insects and native pollinators so that chemical intervention is only used when strictly necessary. And our water is carefully managed, with reservoirs storing winter water for irrigation later in the year.”

What is the atmosphere like on the farm during the fortnight? Is there a sense of pride and fulfilment from the team that has made it possible?

“Yes, there is definitely a sense of pride,” she explains. “Wimbledon is recognised all over the world, so everyone on the farm understands that they are contributing to something iconic. But there is also a very practical atmosphere: people are focused, busy and keen to do the job properly. The satisfaction really comes from knowing that the fruit has been grown well, picked carefully and sent out in first-class condition.”

Wimbledon’s Championing Nature scheme celebrates its first anniversary 🎉

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending the All England Club’s first anniversary celebrations for its Championing Nature scheme. The event — Championing Nature: Game. Set. Grow. — was hosted by climate presenter Abbie Dewhurst and featured a keynote speech from famed naturalist, broadcaster and programme ambassador Steve Backshall.

Championing Nature is a multi-year initiative delivered by four Wildlife Trusts across London, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle, and it funds projects aiming to help those in underserved areas access green spaces, learn about the natural world and develop a deeper connection with nature.

After a small reception, we listened as young people and conservation leaders from across the country spoke about the excellent work they have been doing over the past year and shared personal stories of leadership, conservation and community action. Since the scheme’s inception in May 2025, 28,539 people have taken part in 865 sessions and activities, with 73% of participants coming from underserved and under-resourced communities.

Speaking after the event, Steve Backshall said, “Spending time in nature can completely change the way young people see the world and their place within it. What’s been so inspiring about Championing Nature is seeing young people not only reconnect with the environment but also become leaders and advocates within their own communities. The passion, confidence and commitment we have heard today gives me huge optimism for the future.”

It was a lovely opportunity to hear about the great work that young people are undertaking across the UK to tackle climate change and lead the charge for a brighter tomorrow. I think the most important takeaway from the day was the point about underserved communities and their need for greener spaces. It also made me reflect on our borough and how lucky we are to have green spaces readily available. So many of The Wimble’s readers write in to talk about their outdoor activities, nature projects and sustainability schemes. Her Court: In conversation with Cynthia Valianti Corbett 🟪⬜️🟩

Cynthia Valianti Corbett was working for Citibank in New York when an opportunity to transfer to London arose. She took it, and she’s been here ever since. In 2004, she launched her own “nomadic gallery”, the Cynthia Corbett Gallery. In 2009, Cynthia founded the not-for-profit Young Masters Art Prize. Today, Young Masters has developed into a dynamic programme of exhibitions, museum collaborations, art fairs, talks, and online initiatives that bring contemporary artists into dialogue with history, heritage, and cultural memory.

This summer, Young Masters is taking on one of its most exciting projects yet, Her Court: The Role Wimbledon Played in the Suffragette Movement. The project is in collaboration with Wimbledon Museum (the host of the exhibition) and will run from 2-11 July. This week, I sat down with Cynthia to talk about nomadic galleries, moving to Wimbledon, what it took to get this project off the ground and, crucially, the role that Wimbledon played in the suffragette movement.

Let’s start with you. Were you always in the art world? What galvanised you to start your gallery in 2004?

I, like so many women, found myself at a career crossroads not long after starting a family. I’d studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Massachusetts and pursued a career as an international economist and diplomat. I joined Citibank in New York, transferred to London in 1986, married an Englishman, started a family and ended up staying in the UK. At the time, I was still working and negotiating international debt issues for emerging countries, so I was constantly travelling all over Africa, the USA, and Central, Eastern and Western Europe. And I loved it! But with a family, that sort of career can be difficult.

In 1998, I turned to my husband and said, “I want to go back to college and study art history.” So that’s what I did. I knew I wanted a gallery, but I also knew that I couldn’t afford my own permanent space in central London (which is where I would need to be in order to give my artists enough visibility). So from the very beginning in 2004, my gallery was nomadic. This basically meant that someone would lend me a part of their house near Regents Park, a section of their restaurant or a private room at a hotel. And equally, when I had the money, I would rent out spaces in Marleybone, Mayfair or Chelsea.

Did you find this nomadic style challenging?

In the beginning, it was hard. I had to foster new partnerships and hope that these partnerships prevailed. You have to be incredibly organised to run a nomadic gallery, which, thankfully, I was. But you also have to be incredibly realistic and respectful. You’re using other people’s spaces, and you need to adapt to that.

What is Young Masters? And how does it relate to your upcoming exhibition?

Young Masters was created as a means to help emerging artists. It’s separate to my gallery and not for profit. “Young” stands for contemporary, and “Masters” means looking at history and those that came before you. I have always loved art history, so Young Masters was an extension of that passion, in some ways. We’ve run around half a dozen prizes since its inception in 2009, as well as exhibitions, museum collaborations, art fairs, educational events and talks.

For this Young Masters exhibition, we did an open call for artists to draw on the archives of Wimbledon Museum and respond to the title: “Her Court: The Role Wimbledon Played in the Suffragette Movement”. I have to say, we were very lucky that the brilliant people at the Wimbledon Society and Wimbledon Museum were so amazing in curating the research for us. The museum may look small, but it’s got a treasure trove of artefacts and archives, all of which the artists were invited to respond to. There have been hundreds of submissions, but in the end we could only select 14 artists. We decided to look at everything for this exhibition: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textiles, spoken word, performance, video and photography. An artist’s response to Her Court was designed to be multi-faceted. And the submissions have honestly been incredible.

And without spoiling the exhibition, what role did Wimbledon play in the suffragette movement?

Central to this exhibition is Rose Lamartine Yates. She was a leading figure in the suffragette movement, honorary secretary of Wimbledon’s Social and Political Union, and lived at Dorset Hall in Merton from 1906-35. Yates was a real trailblazer, a real badass. She was even arrested in 1909 and imprisoned in Holloway Jail for a whole month. When suffragettes were released from prison, they were given a silver brooch, known as the “Holloway brooch”, and Rose’s is in Wimbledon Museum, which is really special. What’s even more special is the fact that these brooches were designed by Sylvia Pankhurst, and Helen Pankhurst (CBE) — her granddaughter — is this exhibition’s special advisor. Helen will actually be delivering a talk exploring the themes behind Her Court on Tuesday 7 July, which is such an honour.

It also only occurred to me last year that the suffragette colours (purple, white and green) are very similar to the purple and green colours of the All England Tennis Club. Whether our artists want to bring the tennis — and, more specifically, the history of women at The Championships — into their pieces is entirely up to them, but I think it’s very important to explore that symbolic overlap between the visual language of Wimbledon tennis and the suffrage movement. Really, at its core, this exhibition is about women’s history, protest, visibility and how these themes resonate in our contemporary lives today.

💰 Your Community Bank, the not-for-profit credit union serving Croydon, Sutton and Merton, has opened a part-time hub at Merton Civic Centre. The hub is open Tuesdays and Thursdays (10am – 2pm) and is there to answer any questions and walk you through any paperwork you might be dealing with. Merton council already works with the organisation to deliver the Merton Young Savers Scheme, which helps young people in the borough build good financial habits from an early age. All Year 7 students living in Merton are eligible for a free savings account with a £20 deposit from the council and £10 for their parent or carer, funded through Merton’s Cost-of-Living Fund. 💞 A new initiative has been launched to support Merton carers. The council marked the beginning of Carer’s Week by announcing three new initiatives to support, celebrate and recognise the borough’s carers. The first is Merton’s pledge to increase its funding for the carers grant, called the Carer’s Discretionary Payment. This grant allows carers to receive a one-off payment for a short break to cover the cost of training courses, equipment, or other items or expenses. The second is the addition of two new support groups: Mencap Meet Ups (a support group for carers of people with learning disabilities or autism, running on the second Wednesday of the month) and a new monthly Carer’s First support group based in Wimbledon are available. 🏀 A group of Merton schoolgirls have reached the area finals of a major basketball competition. The girls, from Harris Academy in Merton, reached the finals of the Jr NBA 3v3 basketball tournament after taking part in the Her Time To Play coaching clinic in January. ‘It’s a huge smorgasbord of different styles and genres of theatre’: In conversation with Polka Theatre’s Helen Matravers 🎭

Polka Theatre recently announced its packed autumn and winter season for 2026–27. Leading the season is the new musical Toto, which will begin in October. Theatregoers should also look out for Rebel, Rebel (directed by Helen Matravers); Colours, Colours Everywhere; Blub; The Three Little Pigs; At Sea; and The Sleep Show. Polka’s flagship summer show, Arthur, also starts next week. We sat down with artistic director Helen Matravers to talk about Arthur, accessibility and how the beloved Wimbledon gem chooses its shows.

Before we jump into the summer season, I hear you’re directing a show at Polka next year — tell us about that.

Yes, I’m directing a show called Rebel, Rebel, which starts in January next year. It’s a brand-new show celebrating female voices from the past and present. Also, full disclosure, this is my time solo directing a show. I’ve made loads of work in my career, trained as an actor and devised a bunch of projects, but this is a new challenge for me — and I’m really excited!

Arthur is this summer’s flagship show. What exciting things has the show got in store for us?

Arthur is our YC Chan main house theatre show. It’s actually a co-production with a theatre in Bath called The Egg (and it’s going to be their Christmas show). It’s a very funny, bonkers and silly retelling of the ancient legend. At its heart, it’s a show that explores what what makes a great leader. It follows Grace, who finds herself in A&E during the winter solstice of 2026. Grace encounters Merlin in A&E and is then transported back to the summer solstice in 526 AD, where she meets a young Arthur. Together, they go through a set of challenges, learning to like one another and work out what their individual styles of leadership look like.

It’s written by an amazing playwright called Marietta Kirkbride. It’s got a great set design, puppetry and, of course, the Excalibur moment; we couldn’t leave that out.

What is the process for curating new seasons at Polka?

It’s really tricky. The best way to describe it is it being like a Tetris puzzle. We have to cater for children ages zero to 13. A two year old won’t watch the same thing as an eight year old. We’re really trying to curate new stories and platform new voices, as well as providing audiences with something familiar. There’s a balancing act between book adaptations, new writing, dance, opera, rap and traditional styles of theatre. It’s a huge smorgasbord of different styles and genres of theatre. Because we have two theatres, we always try to make sure there’s a variety between the venues. Whatever is on at the main space will have a different age group, vibe or feeling to what’s being performed at the studio theatre.

There are no more than ten dedicated, permanent children’s theatres in England, and there are none that look like us in terms of being a community hub with play areas, workshops, etc. We try to make sure that what we put on stage mirrors the uniqueness of the building. We’re always trying to create new stories that children are fascinated by.

Would you say that accessibility plays a big part in Polka’s mission?

Absolutely. Accessibility underpins everything we do. We approach our mission with the ethos that no child should ever miss out. It’s important to remember that accessibility is about everyone. We know that there are parents, grandparents and carers who need accessible facilities; for example, they might be visually impaired or hard of hearing. When we look at a show, accessibility is what we think about first and foremost. There is no way we’d ever turn a child away from a show because they weren’t able to enjoy it in the same way their peers could. The doors are open to every single child out there. It’s incredibly important that all children get the chance to see themselves on stage, to have their own story reflected back at them.

Polka actually staged the first ever relaxed performance, and over time we’ve seen that sort of accessibility spread across the theatre sector. We make sure that all of our shows offer dates with British Sign Language (BSL), captions, audio descriptions and relaxed performances.

And how does accessibility inform the curation of shows at Polka?

I think it starts with looking at the source material and then who is adapting the show, who is creating the music, and who is performing. For example, we staged The Firework-Maker’s Daughter around Christmas. It’s a story set in Southeast Asia, but the book was written by Philip Pullman.I asked Jude Christian, who has Southeast Asian heritage, to adapt it into a play for us because it meant there was a real authenticity to the language and world of the production. It’s very important for us that the source material is diverse and balanced, and that it enables children to see stories on stage that they can relate to.

Looking beyond the summer, we’ve got a show called Colours, Colours Everywhere in which the lead performer is a hearing-aid user. Across the board, we work to present the most open and diverse theatre possible so that it can reach as many children as possible.

On patrol with Wimbledon’s lone ranger ⭐️

It’s a sweaty May afternoon when I meet Tom Ruffell outside of Wimbledon Quarter, and I’m immediately questioning my choice of jeans and leather boots. Tom has been Love Wimbledon’s town centre ranger since 2013. For those unfamiliar with Love Wimbledon, the organisation is Wimbledon’s Business Improvement District (BID), and it looks after more than 600 independent businesses in Wimbledon Town Centre to protect the area and promote all the great initiatives taking place in SW19.

The Wimble has worked with the team at Love Wimbledon many times over the past two years, but I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Tom before. He has very kindly agreed to let me shadow him for a couple of hours and see what a day in his life looks like. “I resolve about 150–250 issues each month, working with partners to resolve them” he tells me as we make our way along The Broadway. “And these issues really vary. They could be anything from graffiti on private or public land, fly-posting, fly-tipping, leaks, overflowing bins, commercial waste, cracked paving stones … that’s a big one.”

We’re on a patrol of Wimbledon Town Centre to identify any issues and engage with the business owners and managers. Our first stop is The Old Frizzle. I stand beside Tom as he chats with the staff. They smile, recognising him immediately. “I really think you guys should enter the Merton Best Business Awards this year,” he says to a member of staff. “Your retro football quiz is a great example of innovation.” It’s clear that Tom has a rapport with many of the businesses in the area, and their appreciation for his support is palpable.

As we continue our walk, I ask Tom why he thinks having the BID is important for the area. “The most important aspect of the BID for me is being able to give businesses a voice — to make sure their priorities are heard,” he explains. “We’re here to support them, to get in touch with the right people and to have the answers to any of their questions.”

But Tom’s job goes beyond businesses. As the sole town centre ranger, he is responsible for making sure that everything in the area is running smoothly. In May alone, he managed to resolve 185 issues. “Fly-tipping was one of the worst in May,” he says. “And fly-tipping can be so strange. I’ve found everything from mattresses to push chairs and, ironically, brooms. We tend to find a lot of brooms.” When issues of antisocial behaviour (ASB) arise, the ranger has a relationship with the local police and Merton’s neighbourhood wardens, who were introduced in June last year.

Tom was in his early twenties when he took on his current position. Thirteen years later, and he’s seen much of the town centre change. “One of the best changes I’ve seen in this part of Wimbledon is the money and time spent on refurbishing or developing this area. Just look at the events and businesses we have here.”

I ask him if he thinks Wimbledon has managed to escape the “death of the high street”. He says it has. “I think a part of that is the community here,” he explains. “It really hit home during Covid. It was a challenging time for everybody, not least for businesses. But so many shops and restaurants provided for those less fortunate during that period. The charity that came from the community was really remarkable. I think that’s just another thing that makes Wimbledon so great.”

Our patrol is coming to its end. “That, and also everything that’s on offer — from transport links and green spaces to markets and festivals,” he continues. “I mean, that’s why I’m still here. I love my job, and I love what the area has to offer. I’m very lucky that I can say that.”

🗳 On Wednesday 20 May, councillor Shuile Syeda was elected as the mayor of Merton, making her the first Muslim mayor in the borough’s history. Born and raised in the area, Syeda represents St Helier Ward and has served as deputy mayor for the past year. Addressing the annual council meeting, Councillor Syeda said: “Being the first Muslim mayor [in] Merton’s history is not simply a personal achievement – it reflects the diversity, openness and unity that define our borough.” Read more in the council’s press release.

🔍 What happened to the AELTC during the Second World War? While it may not be breaking news, this week the BBC has produced an interesting article highlighting the roles of major British sports stadiums during WWII. During the war, Wimbledon’s AELTC was transformed into a civil defence and military centre. The clubhouse was used by the Home Guard, decontamination units and emergency services, while parts of the grounds were turned over to food production (including livestock like pigs and rabbits). The club was actually hit during the Blitz: on 11 October 1940, bombs struck the grounds, including Centre Court. Click here to read more.

The Black Lamb — 67 High Street, Wimbledon Village

With an onus on British farmers and sustainable produce, the Black Lamb’s à la carte menus change seasonally and are accompanied by a vast, well-researched choice of drinks. This year, they’re doing a “4-course Wimbledon Set Menu” with standout dishes such as confit Chalk Stream trout with elderflower and cucumber and pork tenderloin with broad beans, tomatoes, fennel and marjoram salsa. They’ve even got their own twist on strawberries and cream with their “Wobbles of Wimbledon” Sussex strawberry and cream jelly.

Orion by Alex Webb — 75-77 Ridgway

Alex Webb — winner of 2020’s MasterChef: The Professionals — opened his first restaurant in Wimbledon Village late last year. His new venture is a French-inspired, British-seafood-led neighbourhood restaurant right in the heart of the village. The menu offers a range of plates designed for sharing, shaped by both the seasons and by Alex’s ties to local producers. And if you’re looking for suggestions, you can’t go wrong with their signature lobster and prawn toast.

Fox & Grapes — 9 Camp Road, Wimbledon Village

Think gastropub classics with contemporary twists at this village pub. And if you see an advert for their supper clubs, don’t question it — grab a ticket now. In fact, last year I had the pleasure of visiting the Fox & Grapes and partaking in their Sourced & Found supper club. It was delicious. Click here to read that review.

Black Radish — 12 Watermill Way

Black Radish offers an intimate 12-seat Anglo-French dining experience. Co-owner and head chef Toby Cartwright has created a warm and inviting oasis in the heart of Merton Abbey Mills. The result is an exciting and thoughtful set menu with everything from wild Cornish sea bass to beetroot sorbet.

Dalchini — 147 Arthur Road

In 2024, Dalchini celebrated 25 years in Wimbledon. The UK’s first Indo-Chinese restaurant, the team are masters of their craft, and the menu is a perfect culinary fusion. Standout dishes include the Mahim Fish Koliwada, Chicken Lollypops and Lamb Dry Red Chilli. Back when The Wimble was incredibly new, I went and reviewed Dalchini (and their not-so-secret speakeasy). Oy Bar — 66, The Broadway

Whilst we’ve already included Oy Bar’s owner Evegeniy Zukin in this edition, it would be remiss of us not to include this authentic bistro too. The atmosphere is about as chilled as it gets. Order a few small dishes with a glass or two of wine, or perhaps try their new and improved brunch menu. Oh, and don’t forget about the shellfish. After all, this is an oyster bar.

Bombay Delight — 271-273, The Broadway

Owner Ajay Chaurasia has been a pro-chef for over 25 years, creating menus for hotels, cruise ships and even the BAFTA film and TV awards. Winner of “People’s Choice” at the 2025 Merton Best Business Awards, it should come as no surprise that Bombay Delight is a favourite among locals in SW19. The monkfish alleppey and the lamb angara are particularly delicious (and a firm favourite of yours truly).
